The situation of garbage and plastic waste in Kinshasa (capital of the DRC) is serious, multifaceted, and with both ongoing problems & emerging responses.

• Kinshasa has ~15-17 million inhabitants.  

• Daily solid waste generation: somewhere between 7,800 and 10,000 tonnes per day.  

• Plastic waste as part of that: estimates vary, but one source says ~12-16% of solid waste. For instance, about 1,500 tonnes of plastic per day in some sources.

Poor waste collection / infrastructure gaps

• Many neighbourhoods lack regular, reliable waste collection.  
• Absence or inadequacy of official dumps or landfills; much of the waste ends up in informal dumps / open tips across the communes.  
• Drainage and streams often clogged by plastic & general waste, exacerbating flooding especially in rainy season.  

Rapid population growth, urbanization & consumption

• More people = more waste; increasing production & use of plastic packaging, water bottles, etc.

· Cholera and Typhoid: Clogged drains and contaminated water sources are a breeding ground for waterborne diseases. Kinshasa regularly experiences deadly cholera outbreaks.
· Malaria and Dengue: Stagnant water trapped in plastic waste provides perfect breeding sites for mosquitoes.
· Respiratory Issues: Open burning of plastic waste (a common "solution") releases toxic fumes (dioxins), causing respiratory illnesses and long-term health problems.

· Choking the Congo River: Plastic waste from the city's canals flows directly into the Congo River, the second largest river in the world by discharge, affecting biodiversity and communities downstream.

· The "Heapers" (Les Bacheliers): The crisis has created a class of informal waste pickers, often children, who scavenge through dumps for recyclables. They live in extreme poverty and face severe health risks.
· "Mountain of Death" (Montagne de la Mort): Refer to the massive, unstable landfill sites that loom over neighborhoods, sometimes collapsing with fatal consequences.
· Damage to Tourism and Image: The visible pollution detracts from the city's cultural riches and discourages investment and tourism.

Responses & positive developments

• Recycling initiatives

 • OK Plast has a plant in Kinshasa (Limete Kingabwa) capable of recycling ~50 tons of plastic bottles per day.

 • OK Plast also runs collection points across the city (for plastic bottles), and gives small payments per kg to collectors.

• Policy / awareness campaigns

 • “Bopeto na Kelasi” (“Cleanliness at School”) campaign by UNICEF in schools across the 24 communes, aiming to raise awareness among students.

 • Local government working with industrial groups to increase recycling capacity. E.g., a partnership to triple plastic waste recycling from ~1,000 to ~3,000 tonnes per month has been discussed.

 • Regulation

• There are laws / regulations about plastic use / packaging etc., though enforcement is weak.  

 • Infrastructure & funding: insufficient funding, equipment, dumpsites; many efforts are small-scale or short-term.  
• Collection coverage: a large portion of waste is not collected by official services. Many rely on informal or private collectors, or dump themselves.  
• Enforcement & regulation: even where policies exist, weak enforcement means plastic bans or regulations are ineffective in many places.  
• Public behaviour / awareness: lack of public garbage bins, habits of littering, limited awareness of health & environmental costs.

 • Improve solid waste collection infrastructure (more permanent bins, more frequent pickups, standard dumpsites)
• Strengthen implementation of existing laws, ensure monitoring & penalties for violations
• Expand recycling plants; support private sector & NGOs in recycling & waste recovery
• Use incentives: paying for collected plastic, deposit return schemes, partnerships with businesses that produce plastic packaging
• Increase public awareness campaigns, especially in schools and communities, to change behaviour around waste disposal
• Integrate waste management with urban planning: better drainage, roads, informal settlements’ sanitation.

• Many drainage channels, gutters and small waterways are blocked by plastic and other solid waste; during rains, this leads to flooding even from moderate rainfall. Some streets become impassable due to accumulated water + waste.  
• Wild / informal dumps exist all over: along roads, riverbanks, in vacant lands, and sometimes transforming natural waterways into de facto dumps.  
• In many communes, waste collection services are uneven or absent, especially in peri-urban or poorer sectors. This increases risks not just environmental but health: open dumps → breeding grounds for disease vectors, contamination of soil and groundwater.
